Popeye as a Unitarian
To a retired UU pastor in FB whose icon is Popeye:
I suddenly realize the irony of your Popeye pic! As a UU you believe that all shall receive grace and be saved and yet Popeye is an image of someone who is always in overdrive to right wrongs through physical force with the aid of spinach. So if you are indeed in overdrive like Popeye and aspire to social activism and yet all shall receive grace, even Bluto and Hitler and Hannibal Lecter, then there is really no need for overdrive or force because everything comes out alright in the end. Everyone has a happy ending. Now I am very partial to UU views but I see them in the context of Hinduism and Buddhism that we are all reborn countless times until we get it right (sort of like that "no child left behind" Bushism.) A little known 12 century Vaishnav of the Vallabh sampradaya (which is Pusti Marga, the path of grace) says that each person at any given time is doing exactly what the need to do to unravel karmic knots which includes Hitler, Mother Teresa, Stalin, Gandhi, and so forth. My only difficulty is the notion that such UU views can be easily reconciled with the writings of the New Testament. One may GLEAN certain verses through cherry picking, but then Moses forbade gleaning and the Law shall not be done away with but rather fulfilled and perfected.
