Internet Relay Chat - IRC
IRC was the VERY FIRST internet chat and it is SO POWERFUL, but I was never able to find a group on philosophy or literature that suited me. So many of the "channels" were really a waste and what was SHOCKING is that the biggest waste were channels consisting of IRC supermoderators who would just make lame jokes and snark and it was a good ole boys clubhouse where they would pick on someone and drive them out. I did find a #philosophy in Undernet founded by a retired teacher, Skept, which is still going, but they were such a cult, political and religious remarks were forbidden, half the time people ridiculed Pomos (Postmodernists) and then the rest of the time they split hairs and picked nits. I put up with it for a year and saved many dialogues but it was like pulling teeth to get a topic going of interest and then VERY few people on line have the ability to stay on a topic for any length of time. The same was true in the golden years of Yahoo Religion chat and Literature chat in the late 1990s BEFORE those chats got flooded with p@rn spam bots. Just today I logged into Yahoo as Om_Namah_Shivaya which I have not done in YEARS and there was one fellow near Bangalore who remembered me and we renewed acquaintances. But I asked him and he said he started with yahoo chat and stayed with it and does not try Facebook or Twitter.
