What Parents Shove Down Childrens Throats
Does everyone here feel that any and every religion is "good", equally good, or do you feel that some religions are inferior to others and perhaps even harmful. It seems to me you are making the assumption that it is unequivocally "good" for parents to "give a child religion" and yet we know perfectly well that there are some extremist forms of religion which encourage children to become suicide bombers. Now this is obviously a worse case scenario of a bad. There are inferior religions which do not teach terrorism but perhaps teach something like white supremacy or something which divides the society rather than unite it. Obviously parents are at liberty to teach their children all sorts of things both virtuous and shameful. Smokers and drinkers teach their children by example to engage in harmful activities. There are parents who by example teach their children to lie and steal. In American society parents have a great deal of freedom and latitude to teach children bad habits and antisocial behavior. I don't know what the answer is. Plato in The Republic tries to describe an ideal state which is designed to produce noble and virtuous citizens. A child has little choice regarding whether the parents raise them as hasidic Jews, Shi'a or Sunni Muslims, Hare Krishna, Pentecostals, etc. As the child grows older they can make choices and change religions or abandon religion altogether. Jeb Bush quietly converted from the Episcopal to the Roman Catholic church and I expect it was more out of considerations of political expediency rather than deep felt spiritual convictions but that is merely my conjecture.
