Behavior
One of the more surprising notions I ever encountered is that if we have a gas in a closed cylinder then, if we examine each molecule, it seems to be totally random, free, even chaotic in its behavior, and yet the volume as a whole obeys very precise laws of temperature and pressure. Instead of molecules we may consider people in a society. Their actions seem free, unpredictable, and yet the society as a whole exhibits a certain collective character or nature.
